Just came across this chilling article on how your office chair is killing you. Sitting is bad for you and can’t be offset by exercise. We’ve evolved over 1.5 million years to be standing. If you’re sitting now, as I am, it’s likely you have some back pain. This is because the natural position of your back is an S. Sitting changes it into a much weaker C shape. Don’t be fooled by chairs offering lumbar support as it doesn’t actually help your spine. Apparently it was just hype created by the chair industry during the 60s and 70s.

The upside to all this is that standing is very good for you. It recruits muscles that don’t tire and it releases an enzyme that converts bad LDL cholesterol into good HDL cholesterol. It also helps you to lose weight and can increase productivity.

If you do plan on standing for prolonged periods of time, make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes and that you are able to move around, which will help reduce the risk associated with constrained static standing.

I had a look around the web for more benefits to standing. Over on easystand.com they have, under the psychological benefits of standing, “give & get hugs easier“.  If that isn’t a good enough reason for you be standing more often, I don’t know what is.
